An environmental movement in the cruise industry is underway, exploring setting the standard with a cutting-edge electric ship.
Norway has ordered the removal of ships fuelled by fossil fuels from its fjords designated as a World Heritage Site by 2026.
The ABB completely electric propulsion system, which includes battery and hydrogen fuel cell technology, will allow the Northern Xplorer, with its capacity for 250 passengers, to sail emission-free through the Norwegian fjords and beyond.
Rolf André Sandvik, founder and CEO of Northern Xplorer, said, “Discerning travellers want to cruise with a clean conscience, and with this ground-breaking green ship, we hope to respond to that tremendous demand.”
West Sea would construct the vessel at Viana do Costello, Portugal, located north of Porto. The World Navigator, World Voyager, and World Explorer are three polar exploration ships with a combined capacity of 200 passengers that the company has built for Atlas Ocean Voyages. According to the schedule, the new vessel would be delivered sometime in 2025.
