In a significant development for the Lakshadweep archipelago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for a slew of development projects totalling INR 1,156 crore during a ceremony at Kavaratti Island. The event underscored the government’s steadfast commitment to the sustainable development of the region, with key initiatives aimed at boosting tourism, enhancing infrastructure, and tapping into Lakshadweep’s untapped potential.
During his address, Modi highlighted the ongoing construction of water villa projects at Kadamat and Suheli islands, emphasising the government’s endeavours to position Lakshadweep as a prominent international tourist destination. The recent hosting of a G20 meeting in the archipelago has already contributed to establishing Lakshadweep as a sought-after global tourist hotspot.
He mentioned a noteworthy five-fold increase in tourist arrivals in recent years and encouraged travelers to explore the pristine beaches of Lakshadweep before considering foreign beach destinations. He envisioned the islands playing a pivotal role in India’s global seafood market share, exploring possibilities such as sea-weed cultivation.
As part of the ceremony, the PM dedicated several crucial projects to the nation, including a submarine optical fiber cable connecting Kochi and Lakshadweep, a “low temperature” thermal desalination plant for Kadamat, a drinking water distribution project, and a battery-backed solar power project. Additionally, he inaugurated a new administrative block and an 80-men barrack at the India Reserve Battalion complex in Kavaratti.
