Brits are choosing to travel to New York over any other destination this Easter, according to Opodo. The online travel agent has revealed that bookings to the Big Apple have almost tripled (up 198%) this year, with overall outbound bookings from the UK up 7%.
High profile flash sales from airlines like Norwegian and WOW Air have resulted in huge savings for Brits this year, with bookings made to New York between January and March 2017 19% cheaper than in 2016. Over the busy Easter booking period, Brits still snagged an average saving of 15% on flights to New York compared to the same time last year.
Bookings to other destinations this Easter have seen a large spike too, with nearly double the amount made to Malta (91%) and a 55% increase in flights to Milan.
Lukas Balter, destination expert at Opodo.co.uk, commented: “The long weekend over Easter offers a great opportunity to head off on holiday and take advantage of the two extra days. While we usually see Brits choosing to stay closer to home and explore destinations in the UK and Europe, this year has seen a marked increase in those opting to take an Easter-shaped bite out of the Big Apple. With the recent dip in flight prices as airlines vie to offer rock-bottom prices with huge advertising and marketing spend behind them, this choice has been shown to be a very savvy one indeed.”
