Myanmar’s government is preparing a UNESCO World Heritage bid for Mrauk-U, the ancient Arkanese capital in Rakhine state.
The Irrawaddy reports that the proposal will be submitted by September next year, and will cover the ancient city’s remains and approximately 380 temples.
From the 15th to the late 19th centuries, Mrauk-U was the seat of Arakanese kingdom which controlled parts of modern day Myanmar and Bangladesh. The site is located on the Kaladan River, 60km from Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine state. A new airport is also being considered to allow visitors to access Mrauk-U more easily.
This is one of a series of UNESCO applications being planning my Myanmar, with other sites including Bagan, the Shwedagon Pagoda and Lake Inle also in line for World Heritage status.
The country received its first ever UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014, when the three ancient Pyu cities were inscribed on the global list.
