Lockdown hobbies the next big travel trend in 2022
After almost two years of lockdowns and restrictions, the pandemic has given many people the unique opportunity to get back to their roots, try new things and find new – or even rediscover past – hobbies. This is hardly surprising though, with numerous lockdowns offering little other than an increased amount of free time and encouragement from the government to keep ourselves fit and healthy.
Research from the British Medical Journal indicates that this ‘down time’ actually contributed to a rise in interest and engagement with physical activity, whilst Sport England revealed that 62% of adults consider that being active is more important now than pre-pandemic.
One activity that thrived as a result of Covid-19 is cycling; the sport has seen a staggering 200% increase since the first lockdown in March 2020, the UK Department of Transport has revealed. Now, nearly two years down the line, the popularity of the two-wheeled hobby remains high. In fact, 72% of adventure travellers admitted to planning to undertake nature and outdoor activities on their next trip, specifically cycling, according to a report from the Adventure Travel Trade Association.
This research, coupled with international travel now reopening, suggests that 2022 will be a year where people will be looking to combine these new-found passions with holidays abroad.
Harvey Downard, Head of Cycling of Cycling for Softies, said: “I expect that cyclists, and those with other new-found hobbies, will be itching to take their new pastime to different places and, with the return of normality to travel, blend their passion with their holidays. Nowadays, people are thinking more and more about the way in which they travel and the impact that this has on the environment and local communities…at Cycling for Softies, responsible travel has always been a core value for us and I believe it’s becoming a core travel value for more and more people.”
