Meet Caroline Shen – Director of Sales & Marketing Renaissance Pattaya
Caroline began her hospitality career in London and the USA, having graduated from hotel school in Switzerland. Focused on learning everything she could, and taking every opportunity to progress, she was blessed with some amazing mentors and managers, helping her to build her confidence alongside her career.
Moving to Thailand with her husband, Caroline took a break from hospitality and became Employee #1 in a new venture which entailed establishing a new company and building a factory outside of Bangkok. After the successful completion of this project, Caroline moved back into hospitality and has not looked back since.
Challenges
Living in Bangkok with her husband and young children, Caroline’s challenge is certainly balancing her home life with the demanding role in hotel operations. She and her husband work as a team, and with his support, she is successfully managing both roles.
Community work
Recognising the difficulties as an expat trying to settle a family in a new country, Caroline set up a network group dedicated to supporting parents with young children in exactly this situation. Over 11 years, this group has grown from 3 or 4 members to over 3,000 – supporting one another with information and face-to-face meet ups.
Advice to younger generation
If you want something, just go for it. Women thrive in senior roles in Thailand and opportunities are there if you are prepared to work hard for it. Express yourself, and say what you want – otherwise how will anyone know?
An eye on the future
Caroline’s goal is to become a general manager, and her dream is to move back to UK as general manager of a historic hotel.
