ICPB report seeks government help to make India global MICE hub
The second MICE market report for India released by India Convention Promotion Bureau (ICPB) with the support of Ministry of Tourism has sought more financial and non-financial support from the government to promote and build India as a key MICE destination in the region.
The report seeks the government to revisit the existing financial and non-financial schemes of the government to support the MICE industry to participate aggressively in the global biddings for large MICE events.
Explaining the key findings of the report, Chander Mansharamani, vice president of ICPB said that globally the convention bureaus are funded up to the tune of 90% by governments while in India the convention bureau run largely through membership subscription. Therefore, the bureau lacks proper infrastructure, information, and intelligence vis-à-vis its global counterparts. Despite all the constraints, he said that ICPB plays the role of a nodal agency for MICE promotions for the country through road shows, educational workshops, etc.
The report has been compiled taking into account the MICE business in 12 major cities in the country. The MICE industry in India was worth USD 808 billion dollars in 2017 and estimated to become USD 1800 billion in the next five years. India gets less than 1% of the global MICE business.
