Euro 2024: Which national team has the most devoted fans?
With just a few weeks to go before the start of the 17th UEFA European Championship, all eyes are on the 24 teams taking part in the tournament bringing together Europe’s top men’s national teams. This year, hundreds of thousands of fans will be making the trip to Germany, the tournament’s host country.
While some have already begun to speculate (more or less objectively) about the fate of their team and the winner of this year’s tournament, which nation comes out on top regarding fan involvement?
Holidu, the holiday rental portal, has put together a ranking of Europe’s most devoted fans. Well, some of the countries at the top this ranking might surprise you! Spoiler: defending champions, Italy, find themselves in 15th position…
The Euro 2024 teams with the most dedicated fans are…
1. England
Announced as the big favourite for this Euro 2024, the English team can definitely count on the support of its fans. Indeed, with 35,300,000 followers on its official social networks and almost 239,100 monthly internet searches in the past year, fans of the English national team will certainly be cheering loudly in Germany! The England supporters will be hoping for another shot at the trophy, with hopefully a less heartbreaking result than that of 2020. Fun fact: the British Foreign Office has warned fans travelling to Germany about the strength of German beer. To be continued…
2. Croatia
Having been drawn in a group with Portugal, Italy and Albania, Croatia will definitely need the support of their fans this year. Fortunately for the team, Croatian fans number in the thousands: 1,720,000 cumulative followers on its official social networks and almost 16,700 monthly internet searches for a country with just around 3,856,000 inhabitants… Impressive!
3. France
Another one of the bookies’ favourites to win this year’s tournament, the French fans have nothing to be ashamed of as they end up in third place. The French team has over 40,700,000 cumulative followers on its official social networks (a European record) and 232,000 monthly internet searches. One thing’s for sure, the French flag will be prominent in the stands of German stadiums this summer.
4. Scotland
Here we have the surprise of this ranking! With 3 qualifiers in 17 editions, the Scottish national team will be counting more than anything on the support of its fans to (hopefully) reach the final stages of this Euro 2024. With 1,710,000 cumulative followers on its official social networks and almost 28,780 monthly internet searches, this country of around 5,454,000 inhabitants intends to make a name for itself this year. The icing on the cake is that a Scottish supporter named Craig Ferguson set off on foot from Scotland to Germany on May 4th to attend the opening game in Munich on June 14th. He aims to raise funds and awareness for the cause of men’s mental health. Hats off to Craig!
5. Portugal
Portugal completes this European top 5. With 27,000,000 cumulative followers on its official social networks and almost 30,130 monthly internet searches, this country of 10,410,000 inhabitants can count on unconditional support from its fans at home and abroad: it’s simple, the national team’s official pages are called… Portugal. Which just goes to show you how much this nation loves football!
