Discovering My Travel Secrets: London’s Hidden Treasure – The Zetter Clerkenwell
by Andrew J Wood
The eclectic bohemian decor of the Zetter Clerkenwell Hotel
Nestled in the heart of London’s historic St John’s Square, The Zetter Clerkenwell is not just a hotel, it’s an experience. This 13-bedroom Georgian townhouse exudes a charm that’s as eccentric as it is quintessentially English.
The location is excellent — the old City of London is on your doorstep, the up-and-coming area of Shoreditch is just a ten-minute walk away, and the West End is easily accessible. King’s Cross and Liverpool Street are very close, along with a choice of two Underground stations within a five minute walk.
I worked and lived in London for 11 years in the ’80s, not far from here at the Tower Thistle Hotel adjacent to the iconic Tower of London, Tower Bridge, and St Katharine Docks on the River Thames. I travelled on the Tube mostly, so I never really got to explore this part of London. I can see now that was a mistake!
As you approach the light blue front door of The Zetter, it feels as though you’re about to stumble upon a hidden treasure — a sentiment that doesn’t wane once you step inside. The townhouse’s bohemian decor is a feast for the eyes, with every corner adorned with eclectic collectibles, taxidermy, and Victoriana. The stuffed kangaroo in the dining room, sporting antique boxing gloves, and the upright cat in the parlour wearing a doll’s dress, are just two of the many whimsical touches that set this property apart.
The rooms feel nostalgic yet grounded in modernity, with a comfortable bed, air conditioning, fridge, flat-screen TV, Bluetooth speakers, and a Nespresso machine.
The original antique artefacts in the room are amazing, including modern versions of Marshall and Roberts radios.
The bathroom was spectacular: a full-sized bath and built-in rain shower. The bathroom taps and accessories were solid, well-designed precision stainless steel that functioned perfectly and with a satisfying click. The bathroom was spotlessly clean, with fluffy towels on heated towel rails and great water pressure. The soap, shampoo, and other amenities were generous and of high quality.
The 13 bedrooms at The Zetter are a visual delight. Each room is unique, with bold shades of heritage colours that pop against vivacious antique pieces. This isn’t your average hotel; it feels more like stepping into a private residence, each room telling its own story. The upper rooms offer enchanting views of London’s skyline, with glimpses of The Shard in the distance — a reminder of the city’s blend of ancient and modern.
When we arrived in the square, there was an open-air chess tournament taking place. It reminded me of something you’d see in large parks or in the movies.
The Zetter Clerkenwell
The Zetter’s location is steeped in history. Just a short stroll away are museums that transport you back to the time of the Crusades, with exhibits showcasing the storied past of knights and armour. These adjacent museums are free to enter, making them an unmissable part of your visit.
But perhaps the crowning jewel of The Zetter Clerkenwell is the entrance lobby and Parlour. It is the most fantastical place, something out of a novel.
Stepping into this Georgian townhouse feels like entering the private salon of an eccentric aunt, one who delights in curiosities and revels in the unexpected. It was utterly relaxing and luxurious. We loved it! The comfortable sitting room is the perfect place to wind down and chill. Cocktails are famous here, with mixologists creating exquisite drinks with bespoke ingredients; every sip is a new adventure!
For those seeking a more traditional indulgence, the Townhouse’s famous Afternoon Tea is a must. In a city where afternoon tea is an institution, the Zetter’s afternoon tea truly steals the show. The Zetter Clerkenwell offers a delightful twist on this cherished tradition. The offering is anything but ordinary. Served in the cosy sitting room, it’s a feast for both the eyes and the palate.
Afternoon tea at the Zetter
Then there are the pastries, a parade of confections that are almost too pretty to eat. Macarons dusted with edible gold, delicate tarts bursting with seasonal fruits, and cakes so intricately decorated you’ll hesitate to disturb them with a fork. And what’s afternoon tea without a touch of indulgence? The Zetter offers the option to add a glass of bubbles — perhaps a crisp English sparkling wine or a flute of something French and elegant. If you’re feeling particularly decadent, opt for one of their signature cocktails, crafted with the same care and creativity that define every corner of this quirky townhouse.
The afternoon tea at The Zetter Townhouse Clerkenwell isn’t just a meal; it’s an experience, one that’s as much about the surroundings as it is about the food. With views of St John’s Square and the sense that you’ve been let in on a delicious little secret, this is the perfect spot to while away an afternoon in the company of friends, or to enjoy a little solo indulgence.
For those who like their tea with a side of character and charm, The Zetter’s offering is nothing short of enchanting. It’s London tradition, but with a delightful twist, just as afternoon tea should be.
Despite its intimate size, The Zetter offers modern amenities, including free high-speed WiFi and a wide range of concierge services including baggage storage. The location too is unbeatable, a short walk from St Paul’s Cathedral and the City, making it an ideal base for exploring London’s historic core.
For those who crave the unusual and the unique, The Zetter Clerkenwell is more than just a place to stay; it’s a place to be remembered.
