Muhurraq, the second largest city in Bahrain, has been awarded the accolade of ‘Islamic Capital of Culture 2018’.
The appointment reflects Bahrain’s significant contribution to the preservation of Arab and Islamic culture.
The conservation projects being carried out across the city, particularly that of Bahrain’s famous Pearling Trail, demonstrates these ongoing efforts.
The trail, which earned UNESCO World Heritage status four years ago encompasses 17 listed buildings, including a fortress and a mosque.
Restoration work on the listed buildings has been progressing over the last four years and the trail is scheduled to be completed in line with Muhurraq being named the Capital of Islamic Culture 2018.
