The English Riviera is getting ready to hoist the sails and welcome pirates of all ages as the much-loved annual Brixham Pirate Festival returns this May Bank Holiday weekend, running from 03 – 05 May 2025.
Organised by a dedicated team of local volunteers, this hugely popular, family-friendly celebration has become one of the South West’s standout events, transforming the historic port of Brixham in South Devon into a bustling haven of pirate-themed fun. With its seafaring history and picturesque harbourside setting, Brixham offers the perfect backdrop for this annual gathering.
Over the course of the weekend, the town comes alive with live music, colourful street performances, pirate re-enactments, and all kinds of interactive antics. Families will be able to enjoy everything, including Pirate-themed food and drink, while the grown-ups can indulge in a little extra rum-fuelled merriment as evening sets in. Everyone is encouraged to get into the spirit of the festival by donning their finest pirate attire – in fact, you’re more likely to stand out if you’re not dressed like a buccaneer!
A key attraction during the festival is The Golden Hind, a full-sized replica of Sir Francis Drake’s famous galleon, permanently docked in Brixham harbour. This unique, all-weather floating museum has been entertaining visitors for over 50 years with hands-on exhibits and fascinating insights into life aboard a 16th-century ship. Festival-goers can explore its decks and enjoy special activities hosted throughout the weekend.
For those with a keen interest in ships, the beautifully restored sailing trawler, Vigilance, will also be open to the public. Built in Brixham in 1926 and known for its iconic red sails, the vessel is a proud piece of local heritage.
Carolyn Custerson, CEO of English Riviera BID Company, said: “We are delighted to be a sponsor of the Brixham Pirate Festival, as it is one of the English Riviera’s most iconic and well-loved events, bringing together our community, visitors, and local businesses in a vibrant celebration of our unique maritime heritage.
“With its incredible atmosphere, family-friendly entertainment, and historic setting, this is the perfect opportunity to escape your everyday and enjoy the spirit of Brixham. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back for another unforgettable weekend in 2025.”
For those who wish to make a weekend of it, Brixham offers accommodation for every type of visitor. Enjoy a luxurious stay at Berry Head Hotel and for a more homely experience, Brixham’s delightful cottages and apartments offer breathtaking sea views and access to the finest local cuisine.
