A woman suffered burns to her face after her headphones caught fire on a flight to Australia.
Channel NewsAsia reports that the passenger was listening to her own battery-operated headphones while flying from Beijing to Melbourne when the incident occurred.
“As I went to turn around I felt burning on my face,” she was quoted telling the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB). “I just grabbed my face which caused the headphones to go around my neck. I continued to feel burning so I grabbed them off and threw them on the floor. They were sparking and had small amounts of fire.”
Flight attendants reportedly rushed to help, but the passenger was left with a blackened face and neck and blisters on her hands. The melted headphones and battery cover were stuck to the cabin floor.
The brand of headphones involved in the incident was not revealed, but it is believed that the fire was caused by the lithium-ion battery used to power the device.
