Asia Pacific remains the most important region for Singapore’s business travellers, according to new data from American Express Global Business Travel (GBT), with regional cities comprising the entire top 10 outbound destinations in 2016.
But different patterns are emerging; despite the annual study showing that destinations are remaining relatively consistent, it does appear that business travellers are starting to consider other means of transport within Asia Pacific.
“The list of top business travel destinations from Singapore has remained incredibly consistent for the past few years now. However when speaking with our customers, we are noticing an increased desire for greater traveller choice through more variety in airline options including low-cost carrier options, as well as broader hotel choices,” said Dr Carl Jones, American Express GBT’s vice president of global client management for Asia Pacific.
“While companies are looking at ways to enhance the traveller experience to cater towards younger members of their workforce, it’s important to balance these desires with the realities of travel budgets and what is a realistic policy for your organisation.”
In terms of the destination rankings, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta remain the top two due to their close proximity and well-established business links with Singapore. Bangkok and Hong Kong are also unchanged in third and fourth, but Manila has overtaken Shanghai to become the fifth most popular destination – a result American Express GBT said was due to Manila’s role as a call centre hub.
London remained the top long-haul destination, while the launch of direct flights between Singapore and San Francisco helped the Californian city leapfrog New York into second place. Dubai and Paris completed the top five.
