Arundel Castle announces 2023 Allium Extravaganza
Arundel Castle is set to host an explosion of subtle colour and beauty this May, as the spectacular Allium Extravaganza takes place. Known as the ‘fireworks of gardening’, thousands of alliums will burst into bloom with their vibrant, pom-pom-shaped heads, including Purple Rain, Globemaster and Christophii.
The long-stemmed plants in the English herbaceous borders will add a surge of colour to the castle’s gardens. Visitors can admire the white blooms of the Mount Everest and Mont Blanc, which will complement the Fitzalan Chapel’s White Garden.
Head Gardener at Arundel Castle, Martin Duncan, said: “We are delighted that the Allium Extravaganza event is returning this May. It’s a truly spectacular sight to see the castle’s gardens come alive with thousands of pom-pom blooms in various shades of purple, amethyst and white. With the stunning Arundel Castle as a backdrop, and accompanying displays of white and blue camassias, it is a sight not to be missed!”
“Alliums are versatile plants that can be grown in a range of environments, from rock gardens to borders, so it enables the team to plant them in various locations within the castle’s stunning grounds and gardens. The blooms not only look great though; they are an important addition to our wildlife-friendly ethos here at the Castle as they are amazing ‘bee magnets’ attractive to pollinators such as bumblebees, honeybees and butterflies.”
In addition to the beautiful allium display, visitors who purchase a full-access ticket to Arundel Castle can explore the castle’s rich history and architecture. The castle has been home to the Dukes of Norfolk for over 900 years and is one of the longest-inhabited country houses in England. Its rich history is evident in its intricate architecture and the beautiful works of art housed within its walls.
The Allium Extravaganza at Arundel Castle will take place in May, but due to the unpredictability of when the bulbs will bloom, visitors are encouraged to check Arundel Castle’s social media channels or website for updates.
