Anne Hathaway’s Cottage to open throughout the year
The independent charity that cares for the Shakespeare family homes in Stratford-upon-Avon has announced that the popular attraction in Shottery will remain open all year.
The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust have announced that Anne Hathaway’s Cottage will remain open this winter and will operate a 12-month opening model in 2025. “With the incredible feedback from audiences and industry colleagues, we feel we are in the best position to explore a year-round opening of Anne Hathaway’s Cottage.
It also comes at an important time for us, as we come to the end of the first year of our multi-year project, ‘The Women Who Made Shakespeare’ we can continue to celebrate the legacy and impact of Anne on the Shakespeare story with more people.”
Said Rachael North, director of Museum and Public Programmes for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.
The extension of opening times comes after a successful early reopening of the property in February of this year, and after consultation with industry colleagues the decision was made to trial a full reopening this year and into 2025. Several roles have been created to support the extended opening and it is seen as another positive step forward in Stratford-upon-Avon’s post-pandemic tourism recovery.
“Our extended opening model means that our exceptional staff and volunteer teams can continue sharing the stories of Anne Hathaway’s Cottage for our groups all year round.”
Exploring the Story of Anne
Anne Hathaway’s Cottage was once home to William Shakespeare’s wife and may have been a place where they met up during their courtship. Groups can explore the grounds and cottage to discover what life was like for the young Anne. With the extended opening the team at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust are exploring new seasonal programming at the property, including some special Christmas activities for audiences to enjoy.
There will also be opportunities for groups to warm up and indulge in luxurious treats in the newly opened Garden Café at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, which will remain open until Christmas as well as part of its trial opening. Confirmed events at the café including hands-on Wreath making and Letterpress Card workshops in November and December.
“We’re excited to welcome groups all year as the seasons change at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the beautiful gardens and orchards as well as the intimate rooms and spaces inside the cottage. We’ve got some exciting plans coming together for Christmas and beyond, and I know the team can’t wait to share them!” Continued North.
