A South Korean airline has decided against launching flights to Japan’s Fukushima Airport due to concerns over nuclear radiation.
The Japan Times reports that Jeju Air was planning to launch charter flights from Seoul to Fukushima this month, to provide travellers with a gateway to the northeast of Honshu Island.
But it has now decided to switch the service to Sendai International Airport, reportedly due to concerns raised by the airline’s flight crews over radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged by the Tohoku earthquake in March 2011.
In a message to staff, Jeju Air CEO Choi Kyu-nam said that while there were no safety issues with using Fukushima Airport, the airline had made the switch to ease the concerns of employees and their families.
