Air Passenger Travel Between US and Europe Up 32%

Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) show that in April 2023, US-international air traffic passenger enplanements1 totaled 19.823 million – up 28.3% compared to April 2022, with enplanements reaching 94.1% of pre-pandemic April 2019 volume.
Originating Non-Stop Air Travel in April 2023
• Non-U.S. citizen air passenger arrivals to the United States from foreign countries totaled:
- 4.562 million in April 2023, up 26% compared to April 2022.
- This represents 79.8% of pre-pandemic April 2019 volume.
On a related note, overseas visitor arrivals2 (with stays of 1-night or more in the United States and visiting under certain visa types) totaled 2.584 million in April 2023, the eighteenth consecutive month overseas visitor arrivals exceeded 1.0 million.
April overseas visitor arrivals reached 72.6% of pre-pandemic April 2019 volume, down from 74.8% in March 2023.
• U.S. citizen air passenger departures from the United States to foreign countries totaled:
- 5.249 million in April 2023, up 28.1% compared to April 2022 and exceeding April 2019 volume by 10.6%.

• Total air passenger travel (arrivals and departures) between the United States and other countries were led by Mexico 3.214 million, Canada 2.487 million, the United Kingdom 1.677 million, the Dominican Republic 878,000 and Germany 813,000.
• International regional air travel to/from the United States:
- Europe totaled 5.665 million passengers, up 32.0% over April 2022, and down only (-8.5%) compared to April 2019.
- South/Central America/Caribbean totaled 4.987 million, up 10.4% over April 2022, and up 2.7% compared to April 2019.
- Asia totaled 1.898 million passengers, up 181.3% over April 2022, but still down (-36.2%) compared to April 2019.
• Top U.S. ports serving international locations were New York (JFK) 2.806 million, Miami (MIA) 1.832 million, Los Angeles (LAX) 1.780 million, Newark (EWR) 1.223 million and San Francisco (SFO) 1.106 million.
• Top foreign ports serving U.S. locations were London Heathrow (LHR) 1.481 million, Cancun (CUN) 1.090 million, Toronto (YYZ) 1.052 million, Paris (CGD) 634,000 and Mexico City (MEX) 619,000.
