Philippines’ Marcos endorses experiential tourism
Experiential tourism seen as a way to attract more travellers to the country
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr pointed out the need for experiential tourism as a way to draw in more foreign visitors to the country, as well as encourage Filipinos to explore its different provinces and cultures.
At his most recent State of the Nation Address, Marcos noted that the country’s tourism sector needs a multi-disciplinary strategy to meet challenges in the post-pandemic era.
Marcos said: “Food, culture, heritage and the arts, education, halal and Islamic traditions, dive, cruise, farm and eco-tourism, even sports, now have become potent subjects and products of a nation’s tourism.”
The President likewise affirmed that he would prioritise tourism, citing its potential to generate more jobs for Philippine citizens.
Getting better results
The current administration’s focus on developing tourism has shown remarkable results in the past year.
In 2023, tourism contributed an 8.6 percent share to the gross domestic product (GDP), translating to at least PHP2.09 trillion in revenue, the highest in 24 years, according to the Department of Tourism.
Total inbound and domestic visitor receipts, on the other hand, totaled PHP3.367 trillion, showing a 75.3 percent increase from 2022.
