Nestled in the heart of Southeast Asia, the land-locked Laos has long been known for its lush landscapes, serene temples, and a distinct way of life that has remained untouched by the rapid urbanization seen in other countries of the region.
However, as the world began to grapple with the effects of climate change and the depletion of natural resources, Laos saw an opportunity to not only preserve its unique beauty but also to embrace the concept of sustainable tourism. This vision was crystallized in the “Supporting Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises (MSME) in the Lao Tourism Industry Supply Chain to Access Markets for Sustainable Practices Project” (SUSTOUR Laos).
Transforming age-old practices
The very essence of SUSTOUR Laos is to encourage the sustainable consumption and production (SCP) of goods and services, and it all starts with the heart of the tourism industry – the Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs). These small businesses are often the lifeblood of the tourism sector in Laos, providing unique experiences and products to tourists. However, there is a pressing need to ensure that these enterprises operate sustainably, preserving the environment, conserving natural resources, and interacting responsibly with local communities. SUSTOUR Laos is designed to facilitate this transformation.
The project is funded by the European Union and implemented by Plan International and key partners, Department of Trade Promotion (MOIC), the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI) and European Centre for Ecological and Agricultural Tourism (ECEAT).
One of the cornerstones of SUSTOUR Laos is the certification of sustainable practices. Tour operators, travel agents and accommodations (hotels, guest houses) that adopt and implement SCP practices will receive recognition through the Travelife certification standards. Travelife, developed by ECEAT, is internationally recognized as a leading sustainability certification system in the tourism industry.
Meanwhile, the Lasting Laos certification is a local sustainability programme for supplier businesses in the tourism industry that have demonstrated sustainable environmental, social and economic practices. Facilitated and administered locally by LNCCI, this programme aims to improve the overall sustainability of the tourism supply chain by providing benchmarks and guidance for supplier businesses to measure and improve their sustainability. These certifications provide not only a badge of honour but also an assurance to tourists that they are choosing responsible and eco-friendly options.
Laos as a green destination
The goal of SUSTOUR Laos goes beyond the MSMEs. It extends to benefitting the entire nation. By promoting Laos as Asia’s greenest destination, this initiative will create a surge in market demand for SCP practices within the tourism industry supply chain. As more tourists and international travel agents become aware of Laos’s commitment to sustainability, the demand for responsible and eco-friendly experiences will grow. This shift in consumer behaviour will drive the tourism industry to transform and adapt, ultimately benefiting the environment, local communities, and the nation’s economy.
For the MSMEs, the advantages are manifold. Adopting sustainable practices not only ensures that they are environmentally responsible but also positions them to compete more effectively in the global tourism market. With the Travelife and Lasting Laos certifications, they will stand out as the responsible choice for travellers seeking authentic, sustainable experiences. This competitive advantage, in turn, results in increased income and employment opportunities for the people of Laos.
SUSTOUR Laos understands that in the pursuit of sustainability, the Lao tourism industry cannot operate in isolation. It must involve local suppliers who share the same commitment to responsible business practices. By connecting these suppliers with the MSMEs in the supply chain, a comprehensive and holistic approach to sustainability is nurtured.
Furthermore, conserving natural resources is an essential part of this endeavour. Through measures such as reducing energy consumption, limiting waste, and preserving water resources, MSMEs will contribute to the overall well-being of the environment. They will operate in harmony with the breathtaking landscapes of Laos, ensuring that the country’s unique beauty endures for generations to come.
However, it’s not just about environmental responsibility. SUSTOUR Laos is equally committed to fostering social responsibility. MSMEs will be encouraged to interact with local communities in ways that respect their traditions, cultures, and well-being. This approach not only enhances the authenticity of the tourist experience but also ensures that the benefits of tourism are equitably distributed among the people of Laos.
As this project unfolds, one of its most exciting dimensions is raising awareness among consumers, particularly tourists and international travel agents. By telling the story of a country deeply committed to sustainable tourism, Laos will not only attract visitors but also inspire other destinations to follow suit.
A sustained effort
Laos is uniquely positioned to be a leader in sustainable tourism in Asia. With its unspoiled natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and the commitment of its people, SUSTOUR Laos is not only a bold vision but a transformative force that will shape the future of tourism in the region. Through the programme, Laos will undoubtedly become a beacon of hope, showing the world that it is possible to promote tourism while preserving the planet and uplifting local communities.
SUSTOUR Laos is more than just an acronym; it represents a shift in the way the tourism industry operates in the country. This project is not a one-off intervention; it is a sustained effort aimed at fostering sustainability. The fundamental idea is that by supporting MSMEs in the Lao tourism industry supply chain to adopt and promote sustainable practices, the entire tourism ecosystem can evolve for the better.
