Wizz Air celebrates 65 million passenger milestone at London Luton Airport
More than 65 million passengers have now travelled with one of Europe’s fastest-growing airlines, Wizz Air, from London Luton Airport (LLA). The milestone 65 millionth passenger was welcomed on a flight from London Luton Airport to Istanbul.
As the largest carrier at London Luton Airport with 12 aircraft, Wizz Air currently operates around 100 flights per day to 58 routes, the most popular being Bucharest in Romania, Budapest in Hungary, Warsaw in Poland and Tirana in Albania.
Last month, the airline announced that London Luton Airport would be an all A321neo base by 2025. Operating in a 239-seat configuration, the switch to all A321neo aircraft offers a nearly 50 percent reduction in noise footprint, 20 percent reduction in fuel consumption and half the amount of nitrogen oxide emissions compared to the previous generation aircraft[1].
Wizz Air has a longstanding relationship with London Luton Airport, the destination for the airline’s first flight from Katowice in Poland. Wizz Air currently employs close to 600 people at LLA and will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year. This latest milestone comes as Wizz Air began the much-anticipated summer season of travel with a 23 percent year-on-year boost in passenger numbers in June. The airline carried 5.3 million passengers over the month, up 4 million from the previous year.
Zsuzsa Trubek, Corporate Communications Manager at Wizz Air UK, said: “It’s a big day for Wizz Air as we celebrate 65 million passengers at London Luton Airport. What we can offer travellers is an exciting mix of popular destinations, as well as off-the-beaten-track locations to explore. As we go into the summer holiday season, we are excited to welcome even more customers travelling for their holidays or visiting family and friends. The UK is an important market for us, and London remains a key focus for investment. We would like to thank the team at London Luton Airport for their partnership over the past 19 years and look forward to what the future holds!”
Jonathan Rayner, Chief Commercial Officer at London Luton Airport, said: “The success of Wizz Air at London Luton Airport is testament to our strong partnership. Since that first flight in 2004, both Wizz and LLA have made huge advances, achieving impressive growth in both passenger numbers and the choice of destinations. Our priority, as ever, is to continue to deliver a simple and friendly passenger experience as we move towards the next key milestone of our relationship with Wizz – next year’s 20th anniversary.”
