29 artists from all over the world will create Icehotel 34
The planning of Icehotel 34 has begun and the selection process for the international design competition is now completed. Out of 157 applicants from 36 countries, 29 artists from 14 countries have now been selected.
Every year, when the Torne River turns to ice, a new Icehotel is created in the small village of Jukkasjärvi in the north of Sweden. The river’s ice transforms into unique artworks that only exist in once. Creatives worldwide have had the opportunity to apply and design their dream suite from ice and snow. Icehotel is a unique art concept that, over the years, has been created by award-winning designers, this year, 157 applicants have applied from 36 countries, and 29 artists from 14 countries have now been selected.
While Icehotel 33 is melting and reuniting with Torne River, Luca Roncoroni, Icehotel’s Creative Director, and the jury of Icehotel 34 selected 29 artists who will create the art in this year’s winter hotel. In November, the artists will traditionally gather in Jukkasjärvi, 200 kilometers North of the Arctic Circle, to jointly create the 3,000 m2 seasonal hotel.
The winning design contributions have been selected by an eminent jury consisting of stylist Marjolein Vonk, artist Anna Sofia Mååg, photographer Linnea Lundkvist, Icehotel’s Ice and Design manager Joakim Enmalm and the jury leader Luca Roncoroni who is Creative Director at Icehotel.
Every year the jury is inspired by the quality of the proposals we receive from around the world, and this year was no exception. 157 artists challenged the jury with their concepts and their unique approach to the use of the material, and the result is a collection of 15 Art Suites which we believe will surprise and mesmerise the guests the upcoming winter, says Luca Roncoroni, jury leader and Creative Director, Icehotel.
In addition to the Art Suites and the Ceremony Hall, Icehotel is bringing back an iconic project in the Main Hall which an artist will again design. The Main Hall of Icehotel is famous for its ice columns and its chandelier, couples take their wedding pictures there, and thousands of guests are left speechless every winter among the beauty of the Torne River ice and the mesmerising play of light and shadow.
