Make the most of your UK staycation in any weather
British weather is famously unpredictable and can make or break your staycation, especially when booking outside of peak spring or summer periods. Even heading overseas doesn’t protect you from a bout of bad weather. Last Easter, many Brits faced ruined holidays after storms in Spain destroyed a popular Marbella resort.
To help you make the most of your getaway whatever the weather, Jess Twitchin, CEO and Founder of QuirkyAccom.com has put together top tips for how you can enjoy your UK holiday even if the weather takes a turn for the worse…
1) Explore local attractions
The best part of holidaying in the UK is nearby tourist attractions are never too far away. So, don’t neglect to visit other nearby tourist hotspots on cold and rainy days.
The UK is home to some of the best museums in the world, most of which are free to visit. Alternatively, explore local landmarks or take the family out for a trip to a theme park. You can also look for indoor activities that will appeal to all the family such as bowling, ice skating, arcades and cinemas.
2) Book a class
A holiday doesn’t strictly have to be for relaxing. Use your time away as an opportunity to try new things. Booking mini courses can be a great way to find a new hobby and build memories while sheltering from bad weather. Local restaurants may offer cookery classes to teach you to cook your favourite holiday dishes at home. Alternatively, try a jewellery-making class or pottery painting. Or if you’re after something to get your heart pumping, try a fitness class – some studios even offer discounts to first-time visitors.
3) Take a mini road trip
If you can’t face the rain but still want to go exploring, why not take in the sights from the comfort of your car?Fill a flask and take a leisurely ride around to find popular points of interest or head off the beaten track and discover hidden spots. You can use your excursion to plan where to visit when the weather clears up.
4) Book a spa day
What better way to banish the cold-weather blues than spend a rainy day enjoying relaxing treatments at a nearby spa? Book a massage or a facial for that post-holiday glow. Or simply enjoy the indoor swimming facilities.
5) Go on a shopping trip
When the weather falls foul, treat yourself to a day of exploring what local shops and restaurants have to offer. If you stick to independent shops and restaurants, you’ll not only be helping small business owners and the wider local economy but you’re likely to find plenty of unique treasures to commemorate your time away. So, don’t forget to stock up on gifts for family and friends! If you’re unsure of where to go, get in touch with your host for some recommendations who may also be able to snag you an exclusive deal.
6) Enjoy home comforts
On a busy adventure-filled holiday, it can be easy to forget to slow down and relax properly. When bad weather descends, why not take a moment to enjoy your temporary surroundings? A good holiday home should be a comfortable place to get some respite, even if the weather isn’t great. Some unique properties will have features you should take advantage of, such as hot tubs, log fires or even impressive TV set-ups for relaxing evenings in.
7) Embrace the bad weather
You can’t control the weather, so don’t let a spell of rain derail your fun. Schedule planned wet activities for rainy days – wild swimming, water sports, water parks and even a dip in the ocean are all great ways to have fun even in wet weather. After all, you can’t get wet twice. Being prepared for bad weather can also ensure you don’t miss out on your holiday. Take care to pack waterproofs, warm layers as well as a pair of shoes you don’t mind getting a bit mucky before heading out in the great outdoors.
