In conjunction with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic plus the airline community at Heathrow, there is an operational change of aircraft movements today (Monday, 19 September) in respect of the Queen’s funeral.
As a mark of respect for the solemnity of this sad and exceptional occasion, Heathrow Airport will stop all departures and arrivals for 15 minutes before and after the two-minute silence, and during the arrival of the funeral cortege and procession at Windsor Castle.
The following has been agreed with airlines:
- 11:40–12:10 No aircraft movements to support the 2min silence at the end of Her Majesty’s funeral
- 13:45–14:20 No arrivals to support the procession of Her Majesty’s hearse
- 15:05–16:45 No departures to support the ceremonial procession via the Long Walk to Windsor Castle
- 16:45–21:00 A reduced departure rate to support the Committal service at St George’s Chapel
Whilst this means the loss of around 30 BA flights the airport points out that effectively 15% of Heathrow’s schedule will be altered, equivalent to a moderate weather event.
Flights will also be diverted around Windsor Castle to minimise noise during the private family service and interment.
