ANA Holdings Inc. announced plans to phase out the use of plastic as part of its goal to achieve zero waste by FY2050.
In keeping with its ambitious ESG goals of the ANA Future Promise, ANA Group has committed to reducing the use of plastic by 70% from FY2019 levels by FY2030 and eliminating the use of plastics entirely by FY2050. To achieve these environmental goals, ANA will stop providing plastic bags for baggage packing at airports after October 31, 2021.
ANA will gradually reduce the use of plastic bags at all airports, while those used for packing strollers and wheelchairs will continue to be provided. For wheelchairs, reusable covers will also be used in combination. This initiative will reduce the number of plastic bags used by approximately 1.96 million bags per year, amounting to approximately 94 tons as ANA works to eliminate the use of plastics entirely.
“We are committed to enacting policies that establish ANA as an environmental leader in our sector, and the elimination of plastics will further decrease our carbon footprint,” said Chikako Miyata, senior vice president and director of corporate sustainability. “By establishing a timetable that allows us to phase out plastics and replace them with eco-friendly materials, we have created a clear roadmap for the adoption of more sustainable practices. Adhering to our ESG targets is at the core of our business philosophy, and we will continue looking for ways to improve sustainability while offering passengers the comfort and convenience that they have come to expect from ANA.”
