85% of Finns support suspending tourist visas for citizens of Russia
A recent survey has shown that around 85 per cent of the citizens of Finland support suspending tourist visas for Russians. Apart from those who said that the country should stop issuing tourist visas for Russians, another 80 per cent of them said that Finland should not permit entry to citizens of Russia who already hold a visa issued by Finnish authorities or any other country, as informed by a news report by Schengen Visa.
The survey, which was carried out by Taloustutkimus and commissioned by the Mothers for Peace activist group, was implemented online between 20-22 September. A total of 1,088 people took part in the survey.
Considering the current situation in the region, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland, Pekka Haavisto, said just recently that he is disappointed with how the EU has been handling the visa issue and pointed out that Finland is urgently seeking a solution to stop issuing tourist visas for Russians.
Haavisto noted that Finland does not want to become a transit country for Russians who wish to reach other European countries. In addition, he emphasised that there is no moral or ethical basis for allowing Russian tourism to continue as normal.
While Finland is yet to make a decision on the matter, the Baltic States and Poland have already stopped issuing visas and have banned citizens of Russia from entering their territories.
