India’s e-visa programme for tourists is starting to gain momentum, with more than 10% of total arrivals in January 2016 entering the country on e-visas.
According to the latest figures from India’s Ministry of Tourism, a total of 88,162 tourist e-visas were issued at the country’s airports in January 2016. This represents about one in 10 of the 844,000 international visitors who entered India during the month, and a 250% jump compared to the number issued in January 2015.
UK nationals accounted for the highest number of e-visas issued last month (25.4% of the total), followed by the US (15.2%), Russia (9.6%), France (6.0%) and Australia (5.3%).
And more than half of the e-visas were issued at Delhi (33.2%) and Mumbai (20.8%) airports, followed by Goa (19.1%), Chennai (7.0%) and Bengaluru (5.4%) airports.
India issued a total of 445,300 e-visas to inbound tourists last year, as the scheme was expanded to 113 countries and territories and made available at 16 Indian airports. In total, the country welcomed 8.02 million international visitors last year, and the e-visa scheme accounted for 5.6% of these.
