The Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA) has projected 375,000 aircraft movement for the Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central (DWC) in 2013, rising to 665,000 in 2020. In 2010, the aircraft movement stood at 307,283 followed by 325,000 in 2011 and 344,656 in 2012. Passengers operations at DWC are due to commence on 27 October 2013.
DCAA director general, Mohammed Ahli was quoted in VIA Dubai stating that a growth rate of 8.6% of aircraft movement clearly suggests that Dubai International Airport and DWC are on a curve of growth. In the first half of 2013, aircraft movement increased by 7.4% compared with 2012.
Dubai International is projected to handle 65 million passengers this year – the airport posted 32.6 million passengers – in a six month period. The DCAA’s Strategy Plan 2013-2015 has also been revealed.
DCAA aims to see passenger aircraft movement reaching 355,000 this year and 385,000 and 416,650, respectively in 2014 and 2015. The authority wants to see 20 new destinations from DIA this year, 22 next years and 24 in the following year. The total number of new scheduled airlines and destinations achieved in 2012 was 12 and 20, respectively, which are above the set targets by DCAA for that year – 8 and 13 respectively. Also, the 2012 figure represents an increase of 100% and 185% respectively, as compared to 2011.
Over the next three years, the DCAA aims to work on several new initiatives including Airspace Development Programme, E-Complaint and E-Suggestion System, Aviation Consumer Protection Programme and Travel Agency Audit Programmes.
HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum said: “The strategic projects will eventually lead us to more success and achieve our goals in the challenging race.”
Aviation’s contribution to Dubai’s GDP is expected to reach Dhs165bn, which is equivalent to 32%, up from 28% recorded in 2011.
